Have you noticed that there is a small icon for LAYERP at the right of layer toolbar?
This is very useful, because you do not need to load the layer dialog box, nor use layer state, you can revert the layer status to previous (undo layer status changes till the beginning).
LAYERPMODE should be turned on.
Please note that the undo does not include the following changes:

Renamed layers: If you restore a layer and its properties, LAYERP restores the original properties but not the original name.

Deleted layers: If you delete or purge a layer, executing LAYERP cannot restore it.

Added layers: If you add a new layer to the drawing, executing LAYERP cannot delete it.
